Hilary Duff: I Was "Obsessed" Over My Weight

Hilary Duff looks so good that she was chosen for the cover of Us Weekly’s first annual swimsuit issue. But when the singer/actress was 15, she came across a press report criticizing her for her weight.

“It made me obsessed,” she tells Us of the story that drove her into a hard-core diet and exercise binge. “I would beat myself up if I had some fat.”

But when the 5-foot-2 star’s weight plummeted to around 100 pounds in 2005 (down from 130 in 2003), her sister Haylie, 22, finally intervened.

“She said, ‘Why are you being so strict with yourself?'It was like an awakening,” says Duff, who eased up on her rigorous program.

“I don’t want to be so skinny that people are like, Oh my god, she’s lost a lot of weight.”

Now, at 19, Duff tells Us that she’s content at 109 pounds. "As you get older, you just get more comfortable in your own skin."

Instead of counting fat grams or calories, she relies on a hearty helping of common sense: lots of greens, lean protein and fresh fruit.

“You need to find balance,” she says.

Hilary Duff Wants To Quit Showbiz

The 19-year-old actress-and-singer is drained by her constant touring and promotional work and admits she sometimes feels like walking away from her career.

Hilary told Stella magazine: "I go get stressed out and I do get sad sometimes about the constant work. When I travel a lot usually I'm just so tired that I just want to go to my hotel room and sleep.

"After doing that for a couple of months you think, 'Why do I do this? Where's the reward?' "

The 'Lizzie McGuire' star is keen to become a "serious actress" but is frustrated that most directors can't see past her child star image.

She said: "They'll meet with me. They'll want to go somewhere and talk, ask questions. Then they'll call and say, 'We really love her, she's great, wow.' But they have no imagination.

"I know people look at me and think I'm just so mainstream, 'She's just a blonde, young girl.' But I want to be really artistic."

John Cusack Defends Hilary Duff's Acting

Hilary Duff at the Dimension Films presents the World Premiere of "1408"

Hollywood actor John Cusack has leaped to the defense of Hilary Duff, insisting her transition from pop singer to movie star is a huge success.

The pair appear together in upcoming movie War, Inc, but Cusack is exasperated by press scepticism about his co-star's acting abilities.

He tells MTV, "The part was... she played a pop idol from central Asia. So, she was like a Hilary - but not Hilary, because Hilary is so classy - but like a real, and I won't name names, but a real slutty pop star."

"Hilary is the opposite of that, of course. I think for her to play that, or to parody that, was really great."

"I think probably people wouldn't know how talented she is. I mean, she's a great actress. I just spent the entire fall with her and she was a revelation every day. I don't think people know that yet, but they're gonna."

Hilary Duff & Joel Madden Are Friends Again

Pop star Hilary Duff is back on speaking terms with her ex-boyfriend Joel Madden after he left her devastated by ending their lengthy romance last November and started dating Nicole Richie.

Duff, 19, had a miserable Christmas as she recovered from the split but recently met up with Madden backstage at MTV show Total Request Live and now enjoys regular email correspondence from her ex.

She says, "Joel was my boyfriend for two years and I loved him - he was a very important part of my life... We e-mail all the time now and are at a really good place."

And, despite fans' concerns that tattooed rocker Madden was the wrong type of guy for the teen pop idol, Duff insists the Good Charlotte singer was the perfect boyfriend for her.

She adds, "People thought we were an unlikely couple, but we really weren't that different. After two months, I didn't even see his tattoos anymore, because that's not who he is. He used to say, 'I don't think there are too many people out there who really get you, but I do.' And he did. I could be stupid, silly, funny, or crazy, and he got it. He gave me a sense of confidence and independence I didn't have before."

Directors Don't Want Hilary Duff In Their Films

Hilary Duff, the Disney club star, 19, said she recently fell for a juicy script, but was told the studio weren't interested in auditioning her.

She says, "It always shocks me the lack of openness, the lack of imagination that some casting directors have.

"I would read a script and be so in love with that, and someone would be like, 'Hilary Duff? Oh no, we don't want her for that."

Although I prefer Hilary over the likes of Lindsay Lohan anyday, she is probably stereotyped with Lohan, Paris Hilton, and other starlets that can't stay out of trouble.

I would like to see what Hilary could do in a more serious movie though.

It seems a lot of directors are going with less known actors to give movies more realism. Maybe that's why she gets rejected.

Hilary Duff: Exclusive MTV Photoshoot

She looks decent, I'm not such a big fan of her smile but I still prefer her than Nicole Richie.
